Bringing together 90 photographs from an artist and a beetle’s four-month coexistence, Becoming beetle traces the extinction of the dung beetle in South Korea and pursues an alternative mode of inter-species kinship that moves beyond the neo-colonial demands of environmental waste, indifference, and loss. The following images are earnest documents of the sites that the beetle and an artist witnessed together from September 2024 to January 2025 in their collective return to New York, Texas, New Jersey, Atlanta, and South Korea. Citing the seminal field guides of Kang Kyong-ae, Donna Haraway, and Clarice Lispector, Becoming beetle embodies the imperfect modes of play and care that can emerge when companions are allowed to link in the mutual process of becoming/relation/reliance.
